Welcome to our rattan installation guide. We’re excited to help you bring your rattan project to life with these straightforward steps. Let’s get started!

There are two ways to install rattan in the frame:

  • Method 1- Install rattan behind the frame with a recess.
  • Method 2 – Install rattan on top of the frame, which has grooves all around.

Materials Needed for Method 1

  • Frame with a recess
  • Rattan – measured to fit into the frame, leave an extra margin
  • Bamboo strips – measured and cut to fit into the recess
  • Container with the warm water
  • Tools – scissors, snap-off knife, stapler, pins and hammer or nail gun, PVA glue

Materials Needed for Method 2

  • Frame – should have a 6mm groove with 14mm distance from the inner edge
  • Rattan – measured to fit into the frame, leaving an extra margin
  • Cane beading – measured and cut to fit into the groove and cut edges at a 45-degree angle
  • Container with the warm water
  • Tools – scissors, snap-off knife, caning wedge, hammer, PVA glue

First, ensure you have everything ready:

  • Prepare the frame with a recess.
  • Cut the cover strips and have them ready for fitting.
  • Measure the rattan to fit into the frame, leaving some extra margin.
  • Gather all the necessary tools.

Step 1: Cut
Cut the rattan to the measured size, leaving extra margin.

Step 2: Soak
Soak the rattan in water for 30 minutes.

Step 3: Shake
After soaking, shake the rattan and let it rest for 10 minutes to remove excess water.

Step 4: Fit
Now, the rattan is ready to be fitted into the frame. Align it with the edges of the frame, ensuring the rattan pattern is symmetrically aligned.

Step 5: Staple
Staple around the edges, securing all ends of the rattan, and stretch the rattan while stapling.

Tips:

  • Begin by stapling and stretching one side first.
  • Do a few staples on each of the remaining sides while stretching to ensure a snug fit and prevent shifting.

Step 6: Cut off
Use a snap-off knife to trim any excess rattan.

Step 7: Clean up
Ensure there are no rattan pieces protruding from the frame edges. You can use a torch if necessary.

Step 8: Glue
Apply PVA glue to cover all the edges, ensuring it does not leak outside.

Step 9: Strips
Place bamboo strips on top of the glue and press them down.

Step 10: Pin
Use a nail gun or hammer to insert pins into the strips, ensuring the material is firmly secured.
Use a nail gun or hammer to shoot pins into the strips, ensuring firmness of the material.

Tips:

  • Ensure the pins go through all strips, rattan, and the frame without protruding.
  • In our case, the staples are 8 mm, the inner frame is 10 mm, the strips are 16 mm, and the pins are 12 mm.

Step 11: Dry
Allow the rattan to dry naturally in a cool environment. Avoid exposing it to heat. Once dry, ensure that the rattan is firm and tightly secured.

DYI – How to install rattan | Method 2

First of all we get everything ready. The frame with a recess. Cover strips all cut up and ready to fit. Rattan measured to fit into the frame with extra margin left. All the tools.

Step 1: Measure and Cut
Measure the rattan, leaving an extra 30 mm all around, and cut it accordingly.

Step 2: Soak
Place your rattan in a container of warm water and let it soak for 30 minutes.

Step 3: Shake and Rest
After soaking, give the rattan a gentle shake to remove excess water, then let it rest for 10 minutes.

Step 4: Fit
Use the caning wedge to slide the rattan into the groove, making sure it’s even and symmetrical around the frame.

Step 5: Secure
Push the rattan down to the bottom of the grooves to secure it in place.

Tips:
– start by stretching and stapling one side first;
– do a few staples on each of the remaining sides while stretching to make it snug. This will prevent rattan from shifting while you are stapling it.

Step 6: Apply Glue
Cover all the grooves with PVA glue.

Step 7: Place Strips
Put the rounded bamboo strips on top of the glue and use the hammer to firmly attach them to the frame, ensuring they’re secure.

Step 8: Press Down
Use the caning wedge again to press the strips firmly into the groove.

Step 9: Trim Excess
Carefully trim any excess rattan on the outer side using a snap-off knife.

Step 10: Final Press
One more time, use the caning wedge to press the strips into the groove for a secure fit.

Step 11: Let It Dry
Allow the rattan to air dry in a cool place. Avoid exposing it to heat. Once dry, make sure the rattan feels firm and tightly in place.
